Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, born February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia, of Lebanese and Colombian descent, signed her first record deal at age thirteen. Her early albums established her in Latin alternative rock, while "¿Dónde Están los Ladrones?" (1998) won the Grammy for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album. The English-language crossover "Laundry Service" (2001) introduced "Whenever, Wherever" to global audiences, selling 13 million copies. The 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" became one of the best-selling singles ever, with over 3.5 billion YouTube views. "El Dorado" (2017) won the Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. In 2023, "Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53" broke the record for the biggest Spotify debut by a Latin song (14 million streams in 24 hours). She has sold over 80 million records, won three Grammy Awards and twelve Latin Grammy Awards, and her Barefoot Foundation has built schools for over 40,000 displaced Colombian children.
