Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, known professionally as Lupe Fiasco, is a rapper and record producer from Chicago, Illinois. Widely regarded as one of the most gifted, intellectually rigorous, and technically skilled lyricists in hip-hop history, Lupe Fiasco brought a sophisticated vocabulary, geopolitical awareness, and multi-layered metaphorical complexity to commercial rap that was essentially unprecedented. Signed to Arista Records (through Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella), his debut "Food & Liquor" (2006) earned three Grammy nominations and introduced the world to his unique blend of conscious street rap and abstract lyricism. His 2007 follow-up "The Cool" is considered a masterwork of conceptual hip-hop. Despite a troubled relationship with his label (Atlantic Records) that delayed his later albums by years, Lupe's artistic output — including "Lasers" (2011), "Food & Liquor 2" (2012), and "Tetsuo & Youth" (2015) — is celebrated for its uncompromising commitment to craft and social commentary. He remains one of rap's most respected and debated intellectuals.
