Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., born September 27, 1982, in New Orleans, Louisiana, was signed to Cash Money Records at age nine by Birdman after leaving a message on their answering machine. He debuted with "Tha Block Is Hot" (1999) at seventeen and spent the early 2000s building a dedicated Southern fanbase before his 2005–2008 mixtape grind—dropping hundreds of guest features and solo tapes—transformed him into "the best rapper alive," a claim few seriously disputed. "Tha Carter III" (2008) sold over one million copies in its first week—the first rap album to achieve this in years—and earned the Grammy for Best Rap Album. He mentored a Young Money roster that included Drake and Nicki Minaj, both of whom became superstars largely through his platform. His impact on rap's technical vocabulary—pioneering extended metaphor, absurdist imagery, and hyper-compressed wordplay—is foundational to virtually every major rap artist who followed. He has sold over 120 million records, earned five Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
